Okay so this is my first post of the new year.
I honestly was contemplating the idea of deleting all my old posts and starting over with this blog, but I finally decided against it. For some reason, throughout my whole life, I've had this overwhelming embarrassment of my past mistakes, and with that a strong desire to hide them away. I'm starting to learn that, although I may be embarrassed by the things I've done in the past, at least they have been an honest expression of who I was at the time. By trying to edit myself in the past, I effectively manage to lose track of my own identity, something I struggle with even in the present.
So this is the end of that. No deleting my old posts. I'm starting to be okay with being me, as flawed as I am.

Alright now that that's out of my system...
It's second semester now and everyone's working on their films. This year we're doing something new with the curriculum. The third and fourth years are all enrolled in a class called Film Workshop, which counts for eight credits. This class meets once a week so rather than having the usual classes throughout the week, we have more time to work on our films. It's a cool idea I think and it seems to be going well so far.
I'll upload some stuff from my film once it's scanned. This year it will be animated entirely on paper!
I want to try to update this blog at least once a week. Can I do it? Definitely maybe!

Yay it's winter break. I'm in Tahoe where I go down snow with plastic and metal attached to my feet. I'm excited to work on my film next semester.

I started making an animated avatar for youtube but then I realized they only use static images. I also started to lose focus with the animating so I just ended it, leaving the drawings stupid and sketchy like. It is very strange.

Ghost in the Toast

This is an idea I sort of came up with at the end of the semester for this silly project for Hobaica's class (that I didn't need to take but was pretty fun). We had to do a "time based" project which could be a whole range of things. I was crazy and insisted on doing this thirty second animation with full color and a soundtrack. Luckily my fellow group members Teryn and Hilary were willing to go along with my insane ploy and we got the whole thing done in five days. I played the guitars and Teryn made the awesome singing noises with her magical voice of magic. We also had some super awesome help from Marina and Michelle who both animated awesome awesomeness. They did the last shot with the bubbles which Hilary colored with her crazy genius color powers. (also she did the background) Nicole helped color some of Teryn's prismacolor marker animation.
It's like Ghost in the Shell but like without the robots and existentialism.

And here's some sort of concepty stuff I did and put into my portfolio.

I did this the night before the portfolios were do kind of for fun even though it's ridiculous to do this much work so close to the deadline. The colors are really weird...something I didn't really catch through the haze of my tiredness. It was a fun learning experience though cause I haven't really done rendered looking stuff like this in PS. The characters are kind of weird looking.... OH WELL.

Okay, I'm failing horribly at consistently updating this thing. Forgive me pleaseeeee....
School's over now and I'm home for the summer. I really wanted to go back the first few weeks but now it feels nice to relax and do primarily nothing. I'm doing some drawings for family friends and stuff and making some moneys so that's cool and stuff. I'm planning on playing guitar, drawing (hopefully a lot), animating (also hopefully at all), and learning to cook.

Here's a shirt design I did for my friend's band! Wooooo!

Hmmmm I can't seem to get any more drawings up here. I'll put up some stuff from my portfolio when blogger decides to let me upload stuff again.

Power Outage

Hey this update is on Saturday not Friday but that is because there was a power outage yesterday. I was in the middle of testing some animation on the lunchbox thing right when it happened too. It lasted until like 10PM or something but I didn't feel like going back to work. It was kind of a nice break but sort of inconvenient since I've been getting behind due to a combination of sickness and allergies.

Okay today is Saturday, not Friday but here is stuff!

We had portfolio reviews for scholarships. Here's a little cover thing I made for mine.

Some life drawing stuff. I started painting and it's neat. You have to go really fast though because mixing paint takes forever. The blue one is a 25 minute pose and the others are 15 minutes.

This guitar guy painting was an hour long pose from Corny's workshop on Sunday which I decided to go to for the first time since the beginning of last semester.

Some paintings on the walls I've done. The one on the left was from my gallery show wall and the other one is on the wall in the area where my cube is.

Okay so I haven't put anything on this blog thing at all in recent months. I dunno why but something about being at school makes me very lazy in terms of using the internets. I guess that's a good thing since I'm working instead of internetting all the time. Or playing Street Fighter.
Anyways, it's second semester and like everyone else, I've gotta make a film. I'm hoping to start animating today actually, if I can get myself out of my dorm. Playing guitar is a lot more fun when there's a film to start.

CalArts is cool. And hot. Ridiculously hot. It was like 115 degrees one day this week or something. It's actually been a lot nicer these past few days.
I was being stupid and couldn't get my computer to turn on until now and now that it's on and I have a chance to update this thing, I don't really feel like doing anything. Uhhh. Well. I'll start posting work as soon as I start making some I think.
Classes start on Monday. I'm slightly terrified but I think I'll be fine.

I was excited fort he film because of Brad Bird's involvement, but a bit unsure about the premise: a cooking rat. But after seeing some footage and listening to Mister Brad Man talk about it, I'm much more excited about it. He also said that his next project would be in live action. He then went on to say that, unlike a lot of animation directors who move to live action, he has no intent of abandoning animation forever.
YAY.

Little Miss Sunshine is a mega good movie. I like it.
I decided to do some drawings of some shots I liked. I haven't done this since CSSSA. I really wanted to do the one where Paul Dano runs down the hill screaming but I can't make myself draw anymore right now.

Also, I found this on youtube. I think I like it more than what they ended up with in the actual video. Every single Gorillaz video off of Demon Days besides Feel Good Inc that I've seen has had the sound off-sync. That bothers me greatly. I'm susupicious that they're not even synched properly at all.

I got an email from CalArts saying they didn't get my high school transcript. It said that they did get my $70 fee even though I met the preferred deadline so it was cheaper...
Sent out a new transcript today but the zipcode was wrong. Gonna try again tomorrow I guess.

I got something in the mail today from CalArts. I was super excited for a second. HOLY CRAP THIS IS IT! IS THIS IT?!!? And then I started thinking, hmmm this package seems kind of large for just a letter. After ripping through the perforated cardboard, the package's contents were revealed. A catalog. With information about the 2003-2004 year.
And I cried to the heavens WHY!?!??!!??!? WHY DO YOU TEMPT ME SO?!?!?! THIS ISN'T FUNNY. POOOOP TOWN!!!

Okay so my friend showed me this band called Deerhoof and they are like mega fantastic.

This is them playing "This Magnificent Bird Will Rise". They had a keyboard player on the album version but it still sounds awesome with just three members.

The quality is lame on this one but it's fantastic still. "The Perfect Me" is the song.

Second Semester

First semester is over. Finally.
January is almost over. Which means that it's almost February which means it's almost March. Argh.

In other news, me and Amelia went to National Portfolio Day in San Francisco two days ago. We went to the Academy of Art and School of Visual Arts review tables but of course the main event was CalArts. Leo Hobaica was the reviewer guy which was a surprise I guess. He said my work was "...good," and then he talked about what I should do if I don't get in for a long time. And wobbled his head. I didn't have any of my 18 x 24 drawings which probably would have given him a better idea of what I can do but they're at CalArts right now (I hope).
Anyways, while we were walking back to the Ferry Building where Amelia got here from, we found a tree with a bunch of parrots on it. And people feeding them. I took some cool photos of Amelia with parrots on her but I can't find my camera. I'll put them up eventually.

Aaand there was no school today because we just had finals. I didn't do like...anything all day. But there was life drawing at the community center. The model was mega ripped. He was cool to draw.

egon schiele

Wow. I bought a big ass book of Egon Schiele drawings and paintings and it is rad to the max. I had heard multiple times about how awesome he was but I'd never really seen his stuff before. He was born in 1890 which I think is crazy. I thought he was from the late 1900's.
I scanned a drawing from the book because it's too small to see.

There's also a drawing he did when he was 15 in there. I thought it was interesting.

Too bad he died at age 28 to a flu epidemic. He still produced a ton of work. I wanna go to Vienna some day to see his stuff in the museum thing there.

I mailed off the portfolio last Thursday. My brain felt really fried that day.
I decided not to come to school so that I could figure out how to get flash and quicktime to work together since apparently quicktime 7 really dislikes flash. So after a few really frustrating hours, I figured out that there's some stoopid setting I need to turn on which didn't exist in the older versions of quicktime. By then I got the .mov file I exported from flash to work. But now a new problem came up: flash based quicktime files don't work in iMovie, the program I needed to use to export my animation to a video camera so that I could then transfer that onto a VHS. I had to buy quicktime pro for 30 bucks so that I could convert the .mov into a .dv but luckily, after that everything went smoothly.
I put a few more drawings into my portfolio case but then I had to go to school to take an in class essay in English. Oddly, I feel like I did pretty well on it. Anyways, I came home and then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to put in more drawings. Once behind those sheets of plastic, everything I've drawn looks much worse to me for some reason. I kept second guessing whether I should send certain drawings. Whatever. I finally got everything in there.
And we we're off to Fed Ex. We spent a long time trying to pad the big box they gave us so that my painting wouldn't get all banged up. I hope the box isn't too big. Argh.
Anyways, it's sent. Needless to say, I'm quite eager for the response.

I saw Tenacious D last night. They rocked my face off. I like guitars.

Well there's no school this week. Fancy that. I really need to get my act together on the whole application thing. Hopefully I'll get most of that done this week.

I tried painting the figure for the first time on Sunday. It was fun I guess, although most of the time it felt like I was just putting down unecessary strokes and not making any progress. I need to paint more.
Anyways, the pose was three hours long. I was probably only painting for two of those. In the last twenty minutes of the pose I went and drew the model's face from a different angle and I like it a bazillion times more than the painted bit. Oh well.

I don't like it too much.

Aaaanyways. I did something neat on Monday. I took my friend's laptop and a mouse to life drawing and I used ms paint to draw through the whole session. It's pretty difficult to draw with the mouse but I think I'm pretty good with it by now after using it so much during class, drawing with ms paint when I should be researching or something. I like to impair my ability to draw. I might be wrong but I think that it forces me to pay better attention and I draw better. Also I'm less anxious about drawing well so the result is usually better. At CSSSA, Corny had us draw with our non dominant hand sometimes and one time we drew with three foot sticks with drawing stuff attached to the ends.

That was awesome. I got to see Amelia and Mary again.
Yesterday was Sketchcrawl 11. We took the ferry to Sausalito and drew lots. There were like 80 of us or something.

This next one is my favorite page. And I swear, Enrico isn't smoking, he's holding a cap in his mouth.

In other news, I discovered that glossy photo paper is awesome for drawing on.
It started when I took some messed up prints from my photography classroom.

And then I started using watercolor and stuff. I like it a lot.

By the way, does anyone know how I can get my profile picture and stuff to align properly? That looks silly right now.

Well..... School's started again.
I'm having a hard time trying to readjust to the routine scream in the morning when I wake up and realize where I'm going to be in the next forty minutes.
But I guess it's not that bad. Ummmmm.
Yeah.
I've been drawing not as much as I want but more than last year which is good I suppose.

Okay I write stuff here, right?
I guess I'll do what everyone else is doing and make a blog thing.
Maybe my life will be interesting. I don't know. Hopefully it will be for you since you're reading this.

So yeah. I guess I'll just use this as a space to talk about stuff and maybe post some drawings every now and then.

School starts soon. Boooo. I want to go back to CalArts. CSSSA was too short.
